Most pianos are 150cm wide! Although piano heights and lengths vary significantly from each product, the width of a piano is generally the same across all types.
Whether it’s a grand piano, upright piano, or digital piano, almost all of them will measure roughly 150cm in width. There are a few exceptions to this rule, which we’ll cover shortly.
So, if you’re considering the space available for a piano, most will need to be at least 150cm wide, preferably a little wider to give some space to move it when needed.
Why Are Piano Lengths and Heights Different?
The reason that the height and length of a piano differs from each product is quite straight-forward – it’s down to the design of the piano.
For example, an upright piano comes in many heights, while a grand piano comes in various lengths. This is because of the layout of the strings and soundboard in each type of piano.
Upright pianos are designed with keys that are perpendicular to the strings and soundboard. The more height the upright piano has, the longer the soundboard and strings are, resulting in a much fuller sound.
Grand pianos feature a different design, with the keys being horizontal to the strings and soundboard. Again, the more length there is, the longer the strings and soundboards are, providing that fuller sound.
So, you’ll find that upright pianos come with various heights, while grand pianos come in many lengths. The one thing that rarely changes is how wide the piano is – it’s almost always 150cm!
Why are Most Pianos the Same Width?
The reason pianos are the same width is because you can’t really make one any narrower than 150cm. most pianos have 88 keys, meaning they require the same width to accommodate all the keys.
Keys must be a consistent size and width across all piano types, so you won’t find many varying in width. The only exceptions to this are very old pianos, some of which are designed with fewer keys, along with digital pianos.
Digital pianos come with various key options, including 61 keys, 76 keys, and the common 88 keys. This means there is more room to adjust the widths. That said, the differences are small, so most won’t be much narrower than 150cm.
